Quick Tip
When mounting a body, never pull up or push down on the side panels in order to make them meet the nose.  Doing so will cause the nose to either slope upward or downward at the front edge.  Try to keep the nose and side panels level so that you don't experience this problem when mounting.

Since our last newsletter, Phantom Racing has been extremely busy with the release of our 2009 ICON chassis and 2009 PhenomES 2.  There has been a tremendous amount of interest in both of these chassis and we feel the upcoming 2009 will be another successful year for PRC and all of its customers.

Caster...Setting it Correctly.
PRC Tip
It seems as though every week we have numerous phone calls regarding the caster setting on one of our chassis and 9 times out of 10, the caster is in fact set incorrectly.  This small error can have detrimental effects on the way which your chassis handles and performs.

(Remember, caster is set by lining up the stamped line on the chassis with the desired line on the caster block.)

Below is a quick and simple way to ensure your caster is set correctly...

Left Front
The left front caster block will have 7 marks across the top of it.  Each line is equivalent to two degrees of caster.  As you look down at the caster block, the line closest to the nose of the chassis is designated 12 degrees.  As you move towards the back of the chassis from there, each line decreases the caster by 2 degrees until you reach the final line, which is in fact 0.

The factor setting on dirt for our chassis is 8 degrees of caster on the LF.  One line "back" from center.

Right Front
The right front caster block is also designed with 7 marks etched in the top.  Again, these marks are equivalent to 2 degrees of caster per line.  For the right side, as you look down at the caster block, the line closest to the nose of the chassis is 14 degrees.  This is the maximum amount of caster available with the standard block.  Similar to the left front, as you move towards the rear of the chassis, the caster decreases by two degrees per line.  The line closest to the rear of the chassis is 2 degrees.

The factory setting on dirt for our chassis is 12 degrees of caster on the RF.  Two lines "back" from center.

If you ever become confused and need an easy reference point to start from, stand both caster blocks up so that the line on the chassis is in line with the "middle" mark on the caster block.  This will be the 4th line (NOT DEGREE but ACTUAL LINE) on both the left and right side caster block.  When you place the caster blocks in this position, the caster will be 8 degrees on the RF and 6 degrees on the LF.  From here, you can adjust it accordingly.

Remember, the amount of caster you have in your chassis directly affects how much weight your chassis will transfer.  The larger the split, the less weight transfer you will have and the more your chassis will want to turn due to the difference of load on the RF compared to the LF.  On the other hand, the less split you have from RF to LF, the less the chassis will want to turn because the tires are more evenly loaded.

The amount of split that YOU need is going to vary on many factors.  99.9% of the time, we run between 3 and 5 degrees of caster split.  The best idea is to start at the recommended factory settings and once you have a solid baseline under the kart, fine tune with caster if you care to.
Frequently Asked Question...

Question MarkI've Seen Some Racers Running a Collar Hub on the LR.  Is this an Advantage?

The PRC Collar Hub has become a very popular chassis component over the past several years.  Not only is the Collar Hub standard equipment on both the Champions and Elite Edition chassis from Phantom, but many racers purchase them seperately due to their added security.

So is there a specific "performance advantage" to running a collar hub on both sides of the axle?  Well...I guess it depends how you look at it.  I'd be lying if I told that putting a collar hub on the LR would make your chassis "faster" or handle better.  BUT...I would say that many experienced racers choose to install a collar hub on the LR of the chassis to ensure that the LR hub does not move.

Other racers will use a basic axle collar to secure the LR hub and this technique is sufficient.  But many experienced racers have found that the collar hub is not only more secure but also is quicker to adjust than the standard rear hub and axle collar.

So there's the answer....take it for what it's worth.
XCEL Clutch Gears...

XCEL ClutchGear

If you have been keeping up with your "Phantom Times" you will know that XCEL Drive Systems is preparing to release its own version of a clutch gear.  After several months of development, design alteration, and material tests, the new clutch gears from XCEL Drive Systems are on the brink of release.

The new clutch gears will have a similiar design to that of the XCEL rear sprockets, which includes a hybrid tooth design for less rolling resistance and a lightened overall design, which reduces rotating mass.

The clutch gears will initially be offered in the 16, 17, & 18 tooth with other sizes soon to follow.

The XCEL clutch gears are designed to fit your standard clutch with a SMC style hub.  This includes Bully, Jammer, Revolution, and SMC clutches.
