Make sure that your axle is secured in the chassis. If it is not or has some room to move, this can cause several problems including brake rubbing, chain mis-alignment, and even binding in the chassis. |

So What's All This Talk About the RR Strut Position???
As the level of competition continues to increase, the level of precision we have to use in developing chassis, assembling them and setting them up must increase as well. There is no area of our chassis where this is more evident than the location of our seat. In the past the location that many people used was to center the front of the seat to the steering upright, center the spine of the seat over the brake rotor, set the bottom of the seat flush with the bottom of the frame rails, set the front sliders wherever and set the seat back to a setting which works with the level of bite present, typically lower for high bite and higher for low bite. These methods have worked and worked well, but with today's chassis' and the level of competition, we need more accurate ways of locating the seat than what we have used in the past.
This is no more evident than with the RR strut - I have fixed more chassis problems with RR strut location than any other over the last few years. So why use the RR strut position as a point of reference rather than the spine of the seat and the brake rotor? There are several reasons: 1) the brake rotor moves around depending on how the chassis is built and how the caliper is mounted, 2) weight does not transfer between the seat and brake rotor, it transfers between the seat and the seat struts, 3) the spine area of a seat does not provide a hard reference to ensure that the proper measurement is made. Using the RR strut position addresses all of these issues. First, it's an easy measurement to make accurately because we butt the tape against the left edge of the motor rail and read over to the right most edge of the strut clamp where it clamps to the frame. Second, since the RR strut is where much of the weight is transferred through the seat, it makes sense to use its location for positioning the rear of the seat. Finally, manufacturers very rarely move the motor rail around when altering a chassis' design, so it provides a consistent reference point from year to year.
For reference sake, on the Icon (for all but the highest bite applications) I have found that 3.75" off the motor rail is where the RR strut needs to be for Jr 3's and adults when the Wiggy bar is not used. If a Wiggy bar is fitted on the kart, 3.75" to 4.25" will typically work well although for lower bite applications I'd still keep it 3.75" or so off the motor rail. Keeping this strut properly located will ensure than your kart loads properly getting in to the corner and that it reloads the LR at the proper time to ensure the kart doesn't push on exit but does plant the LR so that the chassis drives off the corner.
til next time...take it easy!

Frequently Asked Question... |

Is it True that Phantom is Testing a New Chassis to Replace the ICON?
After being asked this question 37 times this week already, I decided that it qualified as the "Frequently Asked Question" for this volume of PRC Connections.
Several rumors have begun concerning the development and testing of a new chassis here at Phantom to replace our current ICON chassis. I would like to clearly state that these rumors are FALSE / INCORRECT / NOT TRUE.
We are in the development of a new "ES style" chassis, however, this is in no way planned to replace our ICON chassis, which is the flagship of our company and the most advanced chassis we have ever produced.
The new "ES Style" chassis will be similiar to that of the one we offered in the past, however, we do plan to make several updates and alterations to this model chassis to improve its already excellent performance as well as outfit the chassis with more "current" components.
Please understand that for any manufacturer to remain competitive in their industry, they must continually test, develop, and research new products. Here at Phantom, we are no different. We spend countless hours each and every week with dedicated personnel researching and developing products that may in fact enhance the performance of our chassis. Does this mean that we are not satisfied with our current product? No. Rather, it means here at Phantom we are dedicated to being the leader in innovation and we are always working towards making our products better, more user friendly, and faster than our competitors.
