Quick Tip
If you do not have a "collar hub" on the rear of your chassis, we recommend placing an axle lock collar on the inside of the hub.  This will keep the hub from sliding on the axle.

Phantom Speed Tip...

PRC TipImpacting Your Wheels...and Your Studs!

Maybe not a "speed tip"...but something we felt needed to be discussed.

Over the years the tendency in the pits has evolved from those using hand held ratchets to tighten their wheels to now most use a high powered battery operated impact gun.  For obvious reasons, the battery operated impact gun has become the choice of most teams.  The speed and ease of an impact gun allows for quicker changing of tires in the pits.  Now even though most karting teams are not practicing to get into the 14 second range on pit road, a battery operated impact gun does make things easier, since here recently the tires have become the most commonly changed component on the chassis.

Like most things in life, Battery Operated Impact Guns come in a variety of sizes and are available in different speeds, voltages, sizes, and price ranges.  As with most power tools, the higher the voltage, the stronger the tool.  For example, a 10 volt impact gun will not supply as much torque as say a 12 or 14 volt.  But if you have decided to purchase an impact gun or you are considering it in the future, bigger may not always be better for our specific application.

Let me explain...

Here recently we have seen several instances where customers have both damaged their wheels as well as even went to such extremes as pulling the threads out of their rear hubs by using a high powered impact gun.  The 12 and 14 volt impact guns have higher amounts of torque and if not used carefully, this increased power can actually damage some of the components on your chassis.  An impact gun with 1,200 or 1,500 in-lbs of torque, if not used carefully, can damage your wheels by imbedding the wheel nut into the aluminum a small amount each time it is used.  Over time, this will badly damage your wheel and could even cause your wheel to fail sometime in the future.

In addition to damaging your wheels, a high powered impact gun with high amounts of torque may also damage your hubs and the threads therein.  High amounts of torque will begin to pull your threads in your hubs and eventually could even cause the threads to pull out.

A good rule of thumb when tightening your wheels is to start each nut by hand and then run the nut on the stud by using the impact.  (Starting them with the impact could cause the studs to strip on the end if one's not careful.)  If when removing your tires, it takes more than a few seconds for your impact to break the nuts loose on your wheel, the impact is putting them on too tight.

We recommend using the Makita 9.6 volt or the Bosch 10.8 volt impact guns.  We currently stock the Makita 9.6 Impact Guns.  Part No. 12200.
Frequently Asked Question...

Are Changes Made To Chassis' During Production?

Question Mark
We are often asked if changes are made to a chassis during its production.  For example, will we alter the fixture or even change some tubing when manufacturing a chassis to improve its performance?

The answer is No.

Every chassis we build here at Phantom is made the same as the one before and the same as the one that is going to be built next.  No changes are made to the chassis, the fixtures, or the production method of a certain model chassis during its production.

In fact, even the material we use for each chassis remains unchanged for the entire duration of that model chassis.

As soon as EACH chassis is done being welded, our Robotic Technician Chris Bailey hand checks each and every chassis to make sure they are correct.  That's Right...Every Single Chassis!  Each chassis is documented and the files are kept on hand for future reference.

So rest assured when you purchase a Phantom Chassis that you are getting the same chassis as everyone else.  We don't make hidden changes or special karts for certain people, each and every Phantom Racing Chassis is designed, manufactured, and inspected to be of the highest quality.
